CloseUp: Gunnar Spardel

German Born film score writer and music producer Gunnar Spardel started his approach towards music in the early age of 12. His first choice of music was classical and he spent 5 years learning to play the piano and later on the keyboard in Hamburg / Germany.

As time went by, Gunnar's head started to get full of exotic musical ideas. Unfortunately he could not put his musical visions into reality because of the conservative values of the music school he went to. From that time on he built up his own music studio and through learning by doing he adapted several recording techniques very fast. He works in a high end studio with virtual and real orchestras and analog synthesizers which makes his sound more than unique.

He lives part time in Germany and part time in the USA which is very inspiring for him. "It's the whole environmental sound scenery in the States which actually gives you a view of what happens mentally in the country."

These days Gunnar Spardel is a busy man. After entirely producing the succesful debut album "Ethereal" for ethereal soprano vocalist Amethyste and writing several songs for latvian singer Inga and he just finished working on the debut CD for his music project "Tigerforest."

Right now Gunnar is finishing his very first film music scores which can be prelistened on this profile!

"Music is like an ocean. It's a huge ocean of ideas and youĂ‚´ve got the chance to create big rivers out of that ocean or just little streams of water. It depends only on your visions, mentality, emotional situation and creativity."

Gunnar's work includes:

Score for the upcoming action / horror movie "Adrenaline" directed by Scott Hansen.
Score for short film "Biting the Dust".
Technical work on the score "August 5th" for composer Shadee Nassar
Album production "Ethereal" & "Shimmer" for soprano vocalist Amethyste
Album production "The Sound of Life" for Tigerforest

CloseUp: Rob Gokee

Los Angeles-based film composer Rob Gokee is the founder and CEO of RVG Productions, a company adept at working closely with directors and editors to create stunning, original scores for film and television. Though his specialty is lush, soaring orchestral scores, Rob has experience working in a variety of genres, including his recent work blending fresh, contemporary guitar and piano demoing additional music for the 2006 season of the nationally broadcast PBS documentary Roadtrip Nation, as well as the award winning comedy short "Bag."

Rob studied under seasoned composer Chris Young (Spiderman III, The Grudge, Ghost Rider), where he sharpened his orchestration, mixing, and marketing skills. As an intern for another rising LA composer, Rob assisted with organization, appointment setting, marketing and spotting films.

Rob's studio includes the following cutting edge resources: Pro Tools 7.3, Reason 3.0, Gigastudio 3.0, two custom-built PCs with dual monitors, a Digidesign M-Box, external Firewire drives, an M-Audio pro 88 MIDI controller, and an impressive array of virtual orchestra and acoustic instrument samples. Rob also has an FTP site at his disposal when working with directors outside of Los Angeles.

Rob first acquired his firm knowledge of music theory and composition from universities in New Mexico and Colorado. Rob has had formal training in classical guitar, and has been playing electric and acoustic guitar for over a decade. He is also proficient in piano, and uses these capabilities in his scoring process.

Through Rob's dedication and initiative, RVG Productions has risen above its peers in terms of versatility and efficiency. From the dark, chilling score written for the film "I Know Who Shot You" to the lush orchestration utilized in the poignant drama "Renounced," Rob has consistently used a collaborative approach to creating striking, effective scores that support and deepen their footage. Rob currently represents himself, and is a member of ASCAP, both as a publisher and composer. He is currently beginning work on the romantic comedy "Broken Hearts Club," a feature film by director Angelo Bell slated for 2008 that's already drawing industry interest. The score will be a blend of live and virtual instruments, all recorded at Rob's facility, Lime Street Studios.

CloseUp: Kristopher Gee

I was born in Los Angeles so, naturally, filmmaking has always been in my blood. I started making films at the age of nine, little stop motion films with dragons and wizards and stuff. I also studied piano at that age. I liked trying to play John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith themes by ear on our little black upright, which was out of tune most of the time.

I then started scoring films in film school when my classmates found out I had a keyboard and could actually compose. I got more and more requests, so I thought I’d better learn to compose for real. I finished a music degree right after film school and started building up my studio which is pretty cool now. I want to score films with budgets for real live orchestra, but for right now, I have an orchestra in a box (my G5) which sounds pretty damn good.

I like writing in vastly different styles. I just finished a film that opened the Whistler Film Festival. The score was a total parody of films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Chariots of Fire and Superman. But then I also just scored an indie feature film called Sweet Amerika which is a somber score with many ethnically diverse elements. I also edited the film too! Final Cut Pro is awesome.

I like meeting new filmmakers all the time, especially ones who have something to say and have seen a bit of this world of ours. I like artists who aren’t afraid to experiment, but are also not afraid to have fun, which is what I like to do.

I think music is a huge part of the cinematic experience. We should treat it with as much respect as we do the screenplay, actors, direction, et al. Why do you think Spielberg thanks John Williams for saving his ass on every picture he does?

UCLA MADNI OVERTURE (action/adventure)
